Within easy driving distance of downtown Flagstaff, Sunset Crater Volcano Monument is one of the most popular tourist attractions within the Flagstaff vicinity. Having last erupted in around 1066, Sunset Crater was named by John Wesley Powell after its colorful cones and cinders. Visitors can explore lava tubes around the base of the crater. However, it is prohibited to walk along the rim, which is considered to be unstable.

Located east of downtown Flagstaff, this monument was formerly home to a large Sinagua settlement and their cliff dwellings can be seen on the canyon's edge. A fascinating attraction, the homes were carved from the soft rock and details of these dwellings and the Sinagua can be obtained at the visitor center. The surrounding area offers scenic trails and the chance to view inside some of the homes.

The awe-inspiring prehistoric pueblos that have come to be known as the Wupatki National Monument draw thousands of visitors each year. Built by American Indians, there are three trails that take you around this scenic area, allowing you to explore the rugged countryside and unique features that include a cinder cone.
A visitors' center provides insight into the area's 800 years of history, with interesting and educational exhibits.
